Reviving an Ancient Grain: Sona Moti Wheat in Bihar
At Barahyia Krishi Fed Producer Company Ltd., we take pride in bringing back one of India’s forgotten grains, Sona Moti Gehu. This heritage wheat variety, known for its golden grains, rich aroma, and superior nutrition, has been cultivated this season by our member farmers Subodh Kumar (42) and Ranjit Kumar Singh (47) on their farmland in Lakhisarai district, Bihar.
Together, they have produced around 200 quintals of pure, chemical-free Sona Moti wheat. A part of this harvest will be preserved as seeds for the next season, while the rest is available for sale to farmers and consumers who want to experience this traditional grain.
🌱 What Makes Sona Moti Wheat Special?
Unlike modern hybrid varieties, Sona Moti Gehu retains its original genetic purity and nutritional integrity. It’s one of the oldest known wheat strains in India and is valued in Ayurveda for its healing and strengthening properties.
Key Benefits of Sona Moti Wheat:
- 🧠 High in essential minerals: Rich in zinc, iron, and magnesium, supports immunity and brain health.
- 💪 Low gluten content: Easier to digest compared to modern wheat varieties; suitable for people with mild gluten intolerance.
- ❤️ High protein and fiber: Keeps you full longer, stabilizes blood sugar, and supports heart health.
- 🌿 Chemical-free cultivation: Grown naturally by our farmers without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
- 🍞 Superior taste and aroma: Traditional “desi” flavor perfect for chapatis, breads, and porridges.
👨🌾 Meet the Farmers Behind the Effort
Subodh Kumar (42) and Ranjit Kumar Singh (47) are experienced farmers from our FPO who dedicated a portion of their land this year to cultivate Sona Moti Gehu. Their efforts showcase how traditional varieties can be both economically viable and ecologically sustainable when supported by collective farmer networks.
With their hard work and the support of our FPO, we have now built a foundation for seed preservation, local distribution, and market expansion for heritage grains like Sona Moti.
📦 Available for Seeds and Food Grain Use
From the total stock of 200 quintals, around 40–50 quintals will be retained as seed for the next sowing cycle.
The rest is available for:
